International Health Programs

Programs that work to extend health services including reproductive health, family planning, nutrition, and preventive measures such as immunizations to underserved populations in other countries; provide essential medication; monitor and report on the incidence of designated diseases; investigate outbreaks of influenza, polio, hemorrhagic fever and other serious illnesses; control or eradicate communicable diseases found in specific populations or various parts of the world; and/or provide technical assistance, training and other supportive services to upgrade the skills and practices of medical personnel and build the capacity of health care institutions abroad to better serve their people. Included are programs that send physicians, nurses and other health care personnel to provide medical care including diagnostic, treatment, rehabilitation and prescription medication services for individuals and families in host countries as well as those whose assistance focuses on building or improving the health care infrastructure in other countries. Some programs bring patients with complex medical conditions back to the U.S. for treatment.
