Block Parent Programs

Taxonomy Code: FN-1500.1550-100

Programs that establish a network of police-screened, easily recognizable homes which serve as a place of safety for children who are lost, hurt, ill, caught in severe weather, being threatened or frightened by a stranger or otherwise in distress. Block parents generally display a sign in a window when someone is home and are expected to call the police, request medical assistance or contact other sources of emergency assistance, as required. Although the primary purpose of block parent programs is to protect children going to and from school, they may also be available in the evening, on weekends and during summer months and holidays. Some programs may also offer safety education programs for children.
