All Terrain Vehicle Safety Education

Taxonomy Code: JR-8200.8500-070

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to ensure their own safety and that of others while operating an all terrain vehicle (motorized cycles with three or four balloon-style tires that are designed for off-road use in a variety of terrains). ATV safety courses are required in some areas and focus on riding skills (e.g., starting, stopping, climbing, descending, traversing a slope, crossing different terrains, emergency stopping and swerving, riding over obstacles, and water and winter riding), safety issues, protective gear, environmental concerns and local laws. The primary objective of these courses is to promote the safe and responsible use of ATV's, thereby reducing accidents and injuries that may result from improper ATV operation by the rider. Many programs include "hands-on" experience, and most provide certificates for individuals who successfully complete the course.
